In "Draw, Paint, & Illustrate", students will move through artistic discovery with a different focus each session, moving towards creating a final illustrated story project in Spring Session 2.
Each session builds on the next and it is recommended that students plan to attend multiple sessions to get the most out of this class.
Taught by Heather MacBeath
Fall Session: Drawing - students will learn/review the foundational skills for drawing such as shading, perspective, and blending and then move on to application when drawing faces, forms, & figures.
Winter Session: Painting - students will learn/review basic painting skills moving from a focus on practicing techniques to one of applying these techniques to create finished works of art.
Spring Session 1: Illustration - Students will apply their knowledge of painting and drawing techniques towards creating characters for illustration. Characters can be realistic or fanciful illustrations and students may use a medium of their choice as they bring characters to life. Time will be spent on rounding out their character’s traits as students develop their individual style and begin to generate ideas for a story.
Spring Session 2: Character & Story Creation - Students will take characters they have created and write a simple story to be illustrated. The goal is to have a short story written & illustrated by the end of the session in a comic strip, graphic novel style, or a children's picture book format.

Join us each week to explore something new! One week we might focus on drawing, another might be painting, maybe the next we’ll tackle mixed media or work with clay. Keep the colorful mess of creative discovery at Total Arts!
Students will be given the opportunity to suggest projects and materials as they explore, discover, and create together. There is no expectation of creating something “art show worthy” in this exploratory class, but if the group wants an end-of-session art show we can make that happen!

Reader's Theater & Performance
K-2nd Grade
Stay tuned for details!
What is "Reader's Theater"? - Reader's Theater blends performance with oral reading practice to improve reading fluency, comprehension, and expression. It provides students the opportunity to explore characters and gestures without the pressure of memorization. - Children may end up memorizing their parts through repeated readings of the script but the primary goals are comprehnsion, increased fluency, and confident vocal expression - This format is a perfect introduction to performance for the emerging reader and/or the student who is hesitant about being on stage.
Students will bring stories and poems to life as they work on reading fluency without the pressure of memorization. As a group, familiar stories, poems, fairy tales, and more will be written into short segments and/or skits to be read & performed at the end of the session.
Children will be encouraged to learn how to read with confidence and expression as they share their scenes. Memorization will not be required although a child may choose to do so. This is a perfect first step into stage performance and acting for the new or hesitant reader or for the child who is nervous about memorizing lines but wants to be on stage.
There is an end-of session showcase during the final class of the session.
Scene Writing & Performance
3rd-5th Grade
Stay tuned for details!
Students will explore the structure of short scenes for the stage as they learn to write their own scripts or adapt known stories to a stage setting.
In small groups students may be asked to come up with lines for a scene, figure out the staging, come up with simple costume & set ideas, and memorize their lines as they prepare for a final showcase performance. Students should be fairly comfortable writing down their ideas independently.
There is an end-of session acting showcase during the final class of the session.
