Join us each week to explore something new! One week we might focus on drawing, another might be painting, maybe the next we’ll tackle mixed media or work with clay. Keep the colorful mess of creative discovery at Total Arts!
Students will be given the opportunity to suggest projects and materials as they explore, discover, and create together. There is no expectation of creating something “art show worthy” in this exploratory class, but if the group wants an end-of-session art show we can make that happen!

In "Draw, Paint, & Illustrate", students will move through artistic discovery with a different focus each session, working towards creating a final illustrated story project in Spring Session 2.
Each session builds on the next and it is recommended that students plan to attend multiple sessions to get the most out of this class.
Taught by Heather MacBeath
Fall Session: Drawing - students will learn/review the foundational skills for drawing such as shading, perspective, and blending and then move on to application when drawing faces, forms, & figures.
Winter Session: Painting - students will learn/review basic painting techniques moving from a focus on practicing techniques to one of applying these techniques to create finished works of art.
Spring Session 1: Illustration - Students will apply their knowledge of painting and drawing techniques towards creating characters for illustration. Characters can be realistic or fanciful illustrations and students may use a medium of their choice as they bring characters to life. Time will be spent on rounding out their character’s traits as students develop their individual style and begin to generate ideas for a story.
Spring Session 2: Character & Story Creation - Students will take characters they have created and write a simple story to be illustrated. The goal is to have a short story written & illustrated by the end of the session in a comic strip, graphic novel style, or a children's picture book format.
